Chaplin's romantic involvements often attracted public scrutiny. He married four times, with three of his wives being teenagers at the time of their marriages. His second wife, Lita Grey, was 16 when they wed; their union ended in a highly publicised divorce in 1927, featuring allegations of infidelity and misconduct. In 1943, actress Joan Barry filed a paternity suit against Chaplin, claiming he fathered her child. Despite blood tests indicating otherwise, the court ordered Chaplin to provide financial support until the child turned 21.
Political Allegations
Chaplin's political views also stirred controversy. His outspoken support for causes like the Soviet Union during World War II led to suspicions of communist sympathies. The FBI, under J. Edgar Hoover, investigated him extensively, and in 1952, while travelling to the UK, Chaplin was denied re-entry to the United States. This effectively forced him into exile in Switzerland, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Legal Disputes
Chaplin faced several legal challenges. In 1947, writer Konrad Bercovici sued him, alleging that Chaplin had plagiarised the idea for "The Great Dictator." The case was settled out of court, with Chaplin paying Bercovici $90,000.
Additionally, in 1923, Chaplin sued an imitator named Charles Amador, who performed under the name "Charlie Aplin." The court ruled in Chaplin's favour, setting a precedent for protecting a performer's persona from imitation.
